Integrative Care

Providence Integrative Cancer Care

Providence Integrative Cancer Care provides body-mind-spirit resources for cancer patients to encourage the best possible outcomes for the whole person. This is done by combining both time-tested and scientifically based complementary medicine therapies with conventional cancer treatment. With an emphasis on positive and proactive health management, our program is designed to enhance wellness and quality of life while reducing treatment-related symptoms. All of our providers have specialty training in cancer medicine and work collaboratively with our medical and radiation oncology team. It is our goal to provide you with the most comprehensive cancer care in southwestern Washington.

What is Integrative Cancer Care?

Integrative cancer care is a form of holistic medicine that combines conventional medical treatments with complementary care. In practice it involves any care that “complements” traditional medicine and can include acupuncture, massage, yoga, naturopathy, and more. The foundational idea behind integrative cancer care is that optimal outcomes are best achieved by treating the individual wholly – this means designing individualized treatment strategies based on the interplay between one’s biological, emotional, and spiritual health. To this end, Providence Integrative Cancer Care utilizes therapies supported by the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the National Institute of Health, and many other reputable sources.

Currently our program offers the following services:

  • Acupuncture
  • Oncology Massage
  • Naturopathic Medicine

To learn more about these services including insurance coverage and scheduling, please contact the Providence Integrative Cancer Program directly at (360) 412-8951.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used for thousands of years to treat, prevent, and diagnose disease.  It works by stimulating the body’s natural ability to heal through the insertion of very fine needles into precise locations on the body.  When used with conventional medicine, acupuncture can ease many side effects caused by cancer and its treatments.  These side effects may include nausea, fatigue, aches, pains, and fatigue.  Acupuncture is safe and comfortable with little sensation felt upon placement of the needles.  The process as a whole is designed to be relaxing, and some patients even nap during treatment.

During an appointment you can expect the following:

  • A complete evaluation of lifestyle factors, such as exercise habits, methods of relaxation, and the stresses you face at work and home
  • Gentle treatment customized to your specific needs
  • A quiet, peaceful environment to relax your body and mind

All services are designed to optimize your health and well-being by integrating acupuncture into your existing care plan.

Many commercial insurers include acupuncture in their benefit plans; however, you are encouraged to contact your insurance provider directly to verify coverage.

Oncology Massage

Oncology massage helps patients going through cancer treatment and recovery by reducing tension and pain, improving blood flow, and encouraging relaxation.  It is a modification of traditional massage techniques and allows a properly trained therapist to safely care for patients who have health challenges unique to cancer and cancer treatment.   An oncology massage therapist will physically evaluate you for potential concerns before administering treatment and can help relieve many issues such as pain, nausea, fatigue, and anxiety.  They can also assist with blood and lymph circulation by using cupping and other therapy techniques specific to lymphedema and scarring.

During an appointment you can expect the following:

  • Risk assessment for contraindications related to your specific diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Adaptable care that accounts for a range of factors including bone metastases, scar tissue, medical devices, blood clotting, and lymphedema
  • A quiet, peaceful environment to relax your body and mind

All services are designed to optimize your health and well-being by integrating oncology massage into your existing care plan.

Many commercial insurers include massage therapy in their benefit plans; however, you are encouraged to contact your insurance provider directly to verify coverage.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine supports the inherent healing capacity of the body to promote good health and counteract the harmful effects of disease.  Identifying and treating the underlying cause of disease is of primary importance to a naturopath who will treat patients according to their unique needs.  Board-certified physicians who specialize in integrative medicine use natural therapies to fight cancer including nutrition and lifestyle counseling, vitamin and mineral therapies, botanical medicine, homeopathy, and more.

During an appointment you can expect the following:

  • A complete lifestyle evaluation to assess your diet, physical activity, stress level, and quality of sleep
  • Help to prevent and manage adverse effects of symptoms during and after cancer treatment
  • A nutritional and supplement plan based on demonstrated anti-cancer effects
  • Individualized recommendations for reducing the risk of disease recurrence and enhancing quality of life

All services are designed to improve your health and well-being by integrating naturopathic medicine into your existing care plan.

Many commercial insurers include naturopathy in their benefit plans; however, you are encouraged to contact your insurance provider directly to verify coverage.
