Medical Interests

I perform laparoscopic procedures such as colon resection, gallbladder and hernia surgery, as well as a range of open general surgery procedures.

I have strong interest in preventive medicine and perform screening colonoscopies. My motto is “We can fix it after it breaks, but it’s better to prevent it.”

Patient Ratings and Comments

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

The RN (maybe) who saw me did not seem all that interested in my questions.

I'm happy with the results of my surgery, but, all totaled, this particular physician hadn't spent even 15 minutes with me before or after the operation. I pretty much had to guess at what I needed to do during my recovery. Even now I still experience moments of pain similar to that which I experienced when my hernia was full blown. This concerns me somewhat [...]

dr Chang had a med student that took my medical history she spent about 3-4 minutes with me.dr Chang came into the exam room with a consent form telling me I needed a colonoscopy and to sign the form next to the X. I said I had questions and concerns about my immediate health and he condecendly told me I needed a colonoscopy. he did not give me any opportunity to ask him anything. he left the room telling me his nurse would be into schedule the colonoscopy.I will be calling his office today to cancel my appt with him. he was very rudine and Did not give me any confidence he would be anyone I would want to do a procedure myself. Please advice dr Chang he wasted my time and my insurance companies money and mine by seeing him. I needed a medical professional to give me a few moments of his day to help me the health issue I have been dealing with four months, also with a #20 pound weight loss.Dr Chang is the most condescending rude Dri have seen. [...]

not particularly great "bedside manner", but obviously very competent and experienced, which is most important.

Dr. Chang had an intern who was very good at explaining my infection because [...] on initial visit did not prescribe any antibiotics for a deep wound 10/12 stitches. Dr. Chang prescribe antibiotics [...]

For nearly a decade Dr. Emery Chang has provided the best of personalized surgical care... as evidenced by my ongoing excellent health. He listens. He cares.

I was refered to Dr. Chang by Dr. [...] to have him remove a cist from my back. He did an excellant job and the area of the cist might not even be able to be found in a month or so. Great job Doc.

Still waiting for a referral to an oncologist

I actually had fun during my visit / surgery. I felt very comfortable

For the past several years, and for various reasons, I have been blessed to have been under the surgical care of Dr. Emery Chang and staff. I'm alive and healthier than ever before today because of :) exclusively.

[...] I asked questions about medication making me sick and the doctor was not covered with that. it was probably from my injuries. I saw my primary and she switched. No more naseu. I didn't get an opportunity to ask about physical limitations [...]. I drove 3 hours to spend 1 min.maybe with the doctor. That did not even evaluate the swelling or the concern of my left shoulder blade that has been very painful along with the broken [...]. A long painful 3 hour drive for no reason.

Put us at ease.

In this visit the care and concerns about my needs greatly improved. Both the nurse and Dr Chang listened to me and spoke with me about my concerns and I felt much better afterwards and actually canceled my appointment with my PCP that I had scheduled because I was concerned about my level of pain I was still having when digesting food. I'm still having discomfort but it's improving. Dr Chang had told me he thought I was improving but that I had so much infection inside it was going to take more time to completely heal. As a result I feel much better about the level of care I'm receiving.

A student came in first and didn't immediately identify himself as a student. I found out when he said Dr. Chang would be in to see me.

They took the time to listen to what I had to say and they made extra sure I understood everything that was going on.

I have repeatedly told this provider and his staff of my allergy to tape of any kind yet he stuck a bandaid on my infected incision [...]! Before I had surgery I told everyone involved I had previously had MRSA and to please take precautions and yet they chose to ignore me [...] I don't trust this surgeon or his staff any further than I can throw them!

I was taken to the room for consultation on my Colonoscopy , that was on time, after that I sat for almost another 1/2 hour before the Dr came in. no one took the time to come in and explain why, I was getting ready to leave as he came in , at that time I did not wish to hear what he had to tell me, he did say he was sorry for the delay, I left

Dr Chang is a decent surgeon. The problem is he doesn't spend time with his patients unless they demand it. The whole Providence team involved in the emergency surgery I had completely ignored everything I told them about me and my body! They were horrible at the hospital! It's still even in my chart online that my skin can tolerate paper tape and it doesn't! [...]

Poor communication style

No problems with provider. Receptionist lost my ID and told me she never received it from me. Another person in the office picked up the receptionist's key board and found my ID. Receptionist never even said she was sorry for saying that I was telling an untruth about giving her my ID.

This provider had to go into emergency surgery, which I understand, but because his appointments are scheduled with only 5 min apart, he got really backed up and there was a lot of people waiting to be seen. I think he needs to increase his appointment times. I felt very rushed when I finally got in to see him and didn't feel completely confident about the answers and care I received.

Excellent job.

Dr. was very through explaining results of his biopsy. He also had an intern with him who was familiar with my case and had been involved in the biopsy.

In my two visits w/Dr. Chang, I felt a little rushed.

Wonderful. [...] has severe [...]. This provider did amazing with her. She loved him.

It was a good experience
