Pediatric Intensive Care
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), is 24-bed unit located on the third floor of Sacred Heart Medical Center, serving a wide range of critical care diagnoses, including:
- open heart surgeries
- Level II trauma
- medical intensive care
- surgical intensive care
Care is also provided for children who are not critical, but require specialized monitoring and close observation.
Neurological, cardiac, surgical and trauma are among the critical conditions seen in the PICU. Care is provided by a team of registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatric intensivists (physicians) and clinical pharmacists, all with specialized training in the care of critically ill children. Support staff, also specially trained in Pediatrics, includes case management, chaplaincy, child life specialists, dieticians, as well as occupational, speech, and physical therapists.
In addition to the inpatient critical care focus, the PICU also provides a safe, child-oriented environment for many outpatient procedures, including endoscopy, line and tube placements and bronchoscopy. Specialty sedation services are provided by nursing and pediatric intensivists to ensure a safe and effective procedure with the child's comfort in mind.
