Spokane Children's Hospital Pediatric Surgery

Spokane Pediatric Surgery Center

Recognizing the important role parents play in the care and recovery of their children during surgery, Sacred Heart Children's Hospital developed the Pediatric Surgery Center. Located on LL1. The Center is designed to make the child and parents comfortable before surgery and keep them together as much as possible during the surgical experience.

The Pediatric Surgery Center has a pre-surgery preparation room aimed at taking the fear and uncertainty out of surgery. A child life specialist familiarizes the child (and parents) with a surgical hat and mask, and provides appropriate, pre-operative teaching so the child knows what to expect. The anesthesiologist and pediatric surgeon talk with the parents and answer any questions they may have.

Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Spokane, WA, is a participant in the The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.

Immediately following surgery, parents are encouraged to join their children as they wake from the anesthesia in the recovery room. Nursing staff and the child life specialist know how beneficial this is for both children and parents. Children feel more comfortable when their parents are close by, and parents are more relaxed when they can be with their children right after surgery.

The Pediatric Surgery Center is staffed by pediatric surgeons, child life specialists and specially- trained pediatric nurses and anesthesiologists. All possess skills in responding to the special needs of their young patients and families.
