Medical Oncologists

Medical oncology is a medical specialty that involves treating cancer with medicine such as chemotherapy, biological therapy and hormone therapy. These medicines are designed to destroy cancer cells and may be used in conjunction with surgery and/or radiation therapy.

Medical oncologists are specially trained physicians who often serve as a cancer patient’s main doctor. The Providence Regional Neuroscience Center includes the expertise of board-certified medical oncologists who offer the latest forms of chemotherapy and other anti-cancer drugs.

For patients with brain, spine or other cancers of the central nervous system (CNS), medical oncologists will likely be part of a team of specialists providing care. This team could also include a neurosurgeon, neurologist, radiation oncologist, physiatrist (rehabilitation physician), oncology nurses and other dedicated support staff.
