Former Rockwood Clinic CEO Joins Providence

October 25, 2011

Providence Health Care (PHC), the region’s most comprehensive health care network which includes Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital and Holy Family Hospital, today announced that Kevin Sweeny, MD—the former chief executive of Rockwood Clinic—has joined PHC as the Chief Medical Officer – Physician Services.

Dr. Sweeny left Rockwood Clinic at the end of 2010 following its purchase by Tennessee-based Community Health System (CHS). CHS also owns Deaconess Medical Center and Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

“We are pleased to have Dr. Sweeny join the Providence Health Care leadership team. His extensive knowledge and experience in working with physician groups will be a great addition for PHC as we build the health care system for the future with the goals of improving the health of the population, enhancing the patient experience, and making health care more affordable,” says Mike Wilson, Chief Executive of Providence Health Care in eastern Washington.

In his new role at Providence, Dr. Sweeny will work closely with the Providence Medical Group—a group of more than 170 physicians and mid-level providers. In addition, he will have responsibility for overseeing PHC’s relationships with physicians and hospitals throughout the region, as well as the development of specific clinical programs at Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital. Dr. Sweeny also will head up recruiting new physicians to Providence and the Spokane community.

“This feels like a homecoming,” says Dr. Sweeny. “The Providence Mission to serve everyone in this community, especially the poor and vulnerable, is a profound commitment, especially in today’s difficult economic times. It’s one I support personally as a physician, a father, and a long-time resident of the Spokane community. Providence has a long history of meeting the needs of the community and is a great fit for me,” adds Sweeny.

Dr. Sweeny graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington and completed residency training at the University of California, Davis, at Scenic General Hospital in Modesto, California. He is Board Certified in Family Practice and is a Certified Physician Executive of the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Sweeny has served on a number of Boards including the Rockwood Clinic board of directors, Washington Medical Group Association, Providence Health Care board, Spokane County Medical Association, and the Premera/HealthPlus board.
