Sister Peter Claver led Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center for 24 years and was beloved throughout the Spokane community for her visionary leadership and unparalleled commitment to the poor.  Outside Sacred Heart, she helped set up the House of Charity Medical Outreach Clinic and initiated the planning for a network of charitable medical clinics.

The 2016 award recipient is Curt Shoemaker. Elaine Couture, chief executive said, “Curt is an attorney by profession, a humanitarian at heart, and a servant leader by nature. He quietly mobilizes resources to improve circumstances for individuals, nonprofit organizations and others he feels called to help.”

Like Sister Peter Claver, Curt’s compassion for others is at the very core of who he is. His empathy manifests itself in action. Curt’s current leadership and volunteer list is extensive, estimated by those who nominated him at over 15 separate and diverse organizations. Curt’s faith has given him an exceptional set of eyes and ears that both see and hear the needs of the less fortunate. Providence is honored to recognize his extraordinary efforts with this award.

Other nominees for the award were:

  • Patrick Barker, MD
  • Dr. Harold and Sandra Goldberg
  • Deb Harper, MD
  • Rob McCann, PhD
  • Sr. Joy Milos, CSJ
  • Elizabeth Plumbo
