Providence Regional Medical Center and Sodexo hosted gatherings Oct. 14 and 15 to encourage healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness among Latino families.

The sessions included an introduction to food labeling, nutrition and healthy cooking. The program was presented by MALDEF, a national nonprofit founded in 1968, and Sodexo, a food-services corporation.

Since 2009, the two organizations have been partners in the Parent School Partnership, which targeted the eating habits of Latino families in the densely populated communities of Atlanta, Chicago, San Antonio and Los Angeles. The program was launched in the Everett area in 2015.

The nutrition awareness program came in response to studies that show Latino children:

Are disproportionately plagued by obesity, diabetes and stress-related disorders.

Are more likely than their non-Latino peers to develop chronic diabetes.

Have the highest childhood obesity rate in the country.

Despite a storm warning Oct. 14, 30 participants showed up to enjoy food and fun. Each participant received fresh produce donated by food-service company Sysco and could sample healthy recipes from Sodexo.
