Care of the Penis

It is best not to use alcohol, powders, lotions and pre-moistened towelettes on newborn boys as they can irritate the penis.

If your little boy has not been circumcised, his penis requires no special care. Do not attempt to retract the foreskin; it will retract naturally in a few years.

If your baby has been circumcised, clean the penis daily with a mild soap and warm water. After washing, keep it dry. The physician may recommend you use cloth diapers. If the penis sticks to the diapers, wet the diaper with warm water to loosen it. Put a bit of Vaseline on the penis to prevent further sticking. You may see some blood on the first few diapers or a whitish coating on the tip of the penis. This is no cause for alarm.
