Minimum GPA of 2.7
GPAs of 3.0 and above are more competitive with emphasis placed on grades earned in the sciences.
Minimum academic prerequisites
Chemistry – Minimum of 16 semester or 24 quarter credits, which must include:
- general chemistry
- at least one upper division organic chemistry or biochemistry course
Biological Sciences – Minimum of 16 semester or 24 quarter credits, which must include:
- general microbiology
- pathogenic microbiology or medical bacteriology
A general biology series may be a prerequisite to the above courses. Check with your college.
Mathematics – One course required (statistics preferred).
Remedial math will NOT satisfy the requirement.
Additional related courses
Courses in the following subjects are also encouraged: hematology, clinical chemistry, human A&P, molecular biology, instrumentation, quantitative analysis, organic chemistry and/or biochemistry (in addition to the minimum requirement), advanced pathogenic microbiology, infectious diseases, clinical diagnosis, mycology, parasitology, virology, antimicrobial therapy, genetics, epidemiology, microbial physiology, cell biology, statistics and medical terminology.
- Personal interview to assess professional goals, judgment, potential for success, interpersonal skills and communication skills required for the profession.
- Minimum of three references (from employers, professors or advisors); personal references or peer references will not be accepted.
Any previous clinical laboratory or hospital-related experience, paid or voluntary, is encouraged.
