One of the largest, most experienced teams of cardiac and thoracic surgery groups in the region, Providence Spokane Heart Institute cares for patients from a large geographic area, including patients from across the country who seek the expertise of our physicians. Our surgeons offer virtually every type of cardiac surgery including heart valve disease, aortic aneurysm, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart failure and other conditions. Many of those patients are back on their feet within 24 hours!
Our staff has the breadth and depth of experience to perform even the most complex cardiovascular surgeries, using the newest surgical techniques, equipment and devices, including robotic and other types of minimally invasive procedures.

What’s the benefit of having a robot in the room for your heart surgery? Smaller incisions; greater precision; faster recovery.
With the advanced technology of the daVinci® robot, minimally invasive surgery is achieved with a few very small ports. This technology also helps reduce recovery times and gets the patient back to their routine much faster.
Common procedures done with the robot are mitral valve repairs, bypass surgery and repairs of atrial septal defects. (Not every patient is a candidate for robotic surgery.) Providence Spokane Heart Institute physicians are leading the way in cardiac robotic surgery and have trained scores of physicians around the world since beginning their work in 2002.
Minimally Invasive Valve Therapy
Another alternative to traditional surgery is the region’s only Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Program (TAVR). A specialized heart valve team including cardiovascular surgeons and cardiologists offers this minimally invasive alternative to open-heart prodedures for patients who would be high-risk for conventional surgery.
Spokane Heart Transplant & Mechanical Heart Program
Our Thoracic Organ Transplant and Mechanical Heart surgeons and specialists provide extensive care for the most critical heart patients—in one of the world’s first open-heart surgery programs.
Our compassionate staff members are committed to being side by side with patients through the entire process of preparing for either a heart transplant or a ventricular assist device. Consistently, the Sacred Heart program is ranked among the top transplant centers in the country by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, with survival rates surpassing the national average. Sacred Heart’s patient survival rate is consistently 15 percent higher than the national norm.
The artificial heart program offers advanced therapies including ventricular assist devices (as bridge to transplant and as destination therapy). Total artificial hearts are also available through Providence. Sacred Heart is certified by the Joint Commission for Destination Therapy — implanting left ventricular assist devices in patients who will rely on them for the rest of their lives.
