Providence gastroenterologists provide diagnosis and treatment of digestive issues and treat conditions of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas, bile ducts and liver.

Services and procedures include:

  • Colonoscopy - A diagnostic procedure used to image, inspect and diagnose conditions within the lower gastrointestinal tract and digestive system. The detailed images created allow for accurate diagnoses of colon cancer and help determine next steps for cancer treatment.
  • Upper endoscopy - During an upper endoscopy, the specialist uses a scope to examine your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Our gastroenterologists perform many of these procedures every year. This assures you experience and quality for a more professional, comfortable experience.
  • Capsule endoscopy - Capsule endoscopy allows the specialist to examine the small intestine though a non-invasive procedure. You swallow a vitamin-pill-sized camera that films its journey through the digestive tract, then is eliminated. The technology offers doctor the most comprehensive view of the small intestine possible for the diagnosis of recurrent or persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding or anemia.

New Guidelines

The American Cancer Society and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently revised their guidelines to begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Contact your health insurance provider to learn about coverage information for colorectal screening. If you’ve suffered from abdominal pain, bleeding and changes in bowel habits, or are potentially at risk of developing colon cancer, your doctor will likely recommend a colonoscopy.

Our gastroenterologists have extensive training and experience performing colonoscopies, using a scope to examine the lining of the large intestine. This helps assure that your procedure will be safe, professional and meet high standards of quality. The physicians perform the colonoscopies in the Providence St. Mary Medical Center Endoscopic Unit, the only endoscopy unit in the area recognized for quality and safety by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

A colonoscopy is generally a safe procedure. If you’re 45 or older, or you have a family history of colorectal cancer, ask your doctor about scheduling a colonoscopy.

Your doctor will ask you to prepare your bowels before your colonoscopy. This preparation may take place up to three days before the procedure and will require you to alter your diet and take medication that is designed to cleanse your colon.
