Dedicated to healing

Located on the campus of Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph is a 112-bed licensed skilled nursing facility with one of the highest patient acuity levels in the state, providing long-term care services as well as short-term rehabilitation care for orthopedic, cardiac and neurological patients as they transition from hospital to home.

For more than 80 years, Providence St. Joseph Care Center’s staff has lovingly served patients with special needs following surgery, and those who simply are no longer able to live independently. Our unwavering commitment to quality is matched with compassion, dignity and respect.

For aging patients who need psychiatric care, experts from Providence Sacred Heart’s psychiatry department are available for consultations and treatment. St. Joseph’s also has hospitalists on staff 24/7 to ensure a physician is available in the halls whenever the need arises.

The Transitional Care Unit is designed specifically for short-term rehabilitation patients as they transition from the hospital and then to their homes. It offers a contemporary setting, private rooms and state-of-the-art therapy services.

Care for life's transitions

For more than 80 years, Providence St. Joseph Care Center has served as a loving extension of families who need help caring for a loved one, carrying on the tradition of the Sisters of Providence who began their works by providing homes for the frail and ill elderly.

St. Joseph has also provided a refuge for those with nowhere else to turn. Patients with special needs, complex or expensive care usually have few choices when it comes to finding a skilled nursing facility. For many residents, Saint Joseph is alone in opening our doors and providing needed care.

Compassion and dignity

Some residents stay for only a short time to receive complex skilled nursing care, IV antibiotics and therapy until they are ready to return home. However, for many residents, St. Joseph Care Center becomes “home” for the remainder of their lives.

We offer a caring environment for our residents and their families, with quality care provided by skilled, compassionate staff, committed to serve the Providence Mission.

Providence Transitional Care Unit is designed for alert, oriented individuals who are recovering from orthopedic, cardiac and neurological procedures. A typical stay is one to two weeks, but there is no mandatory limit on the length of stay.

Our experienced nursing staff cares for rehabilitation patients in Spokane with a variety of special medical needs including IVs, Wound Vacs, TPN (artificial nutrition), previously established tracheotomies and mechanical hearts.

Patient care is managed by one of our medical directors, or by your own physician.

Our outpatient program allows us to offer patients the option of continuing their rehabilitation progress with the same excellent therapists they worked with prior to discharge.

Admission requirements

Medicare requires a minimum three-night stay in the hospital to qualify for transitional care unit coverage. Private insurance requirements vary by contract; we can help you determine coverage eligibility.

Unlike in-patient rehabilitation settings, there is no requirement for patients to tolerate three hours of therapy each day. Therapy schedules and intensity are individually designed to accommodate the patient’s needs and tolerance levels.

Accepted health insurance plans

We accept payment from Medicare, Medicaid, private pay and most insurance plans. As a courtesy, we will bill your insurance company. Financial assistance for our services is available for those who qualify. Please call us if you have additional questions about accepted health insurance plans or financial aid.

It’s important to understand insurance benefits vary depending on your health plan. If you have specific questions about your plan or available benefits, please contact your insurance provider.
