Providence St. Mary Medical Center is constructing a medical office building on Poplar Street.

The medical office building and associated parking will span the block of Poplar Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues. The 40,000-square-foot, three-story facility is scheduled to open in 2017. The site also will include around 40 new parking spaces.

Structures currently on the site will be removed. Providence is working with New Beginnings, a local church, to relocate the houses for use as shelter for the city’s homeless. The church has found a site. Providence will conduct the initial phase of moving the houses for the church.

While both parties are optimistic, if it is determined not to be feasible, Providence will salvage what materials it can and then raze the structures.

The center will bring together the elements of Providence’s expanding neuroscience services, including neurosurgery, physiatry, imaging and associated services, as well as classrooms for education events.

“Patients come from all over the region for our neuroscience services, particularly the minimally invasive computer-assisted spine surgery,” said Susan Blackburn, Chief Operating Office of Providence St. Mary Medical Center. “The program has grown so strongly that a new building is needed to accommodate it.”

Patients and visitors should find it both more convenient and more comfortable. It includes parking in the front of the building, access to all neuroscience specialists in one place, more exam rooms, large reception areas, lots of natural light, excellent handicap accessibility and handy restrooms. Many of the imaging tests typically ordered for neuroscience patients will be available without leaving the building.

For the project, Providence has selected NAC Architects out of Spokane. Jackson Contractor Group from Missoula will serve as the general contractor.

Providence St. Mary Medical Center, a 142-bed regional hospital located in Walla Walla, Wash., is the fourth largest employer in Walla Walla County. The Providence Medical Group is the largest group of primary care providers and specialists in the Walla Walla area.
