Spokane, WA—The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) has re-accredited Providence Epilepsy Center as a level 3 epilepsy center for 2018 and 2019. Level 3 epilepsy centers provide the highest level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

“This reaccreditation clearly spotlights our expert team, facilities and comprehensive services provided at the Providence Epilepsy Center,” says Tim Powell, M.D., clinical director of the Providence Epilepsy Center located on the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center campus. “Our providers lead the region in expertise for medical and pre-surgical management of Epilepsy along the entire spectrum of neurological disorders.”

Marie Atkinson, M.D., Tim Powell, M.D. and Natasha Sparrow, D.O. carry board certifications in epilepsy, electroencephalography (EEG) and neurology. As the only level 3 epilepsy center in the region, the expansive team provides services to people from throughout the greater Inland Northwest region.

According to NAEC, there are four levels of epilepsy care and the organization accredits epilepsy centers that provide level 3 and 4 care:

  • Level 1 epilepsy care typically occurs at an emergency room or a primary care physician’s office with an epilepsy evaluation.
  • Level 2 epilepsy care involves a consultation with a general neurologist. This consultation may occur at a specialized epilepsy center.
  • Levels 3 and 4 care takes place at specialized epilepsy centers.
