Agreement Adds Providence to Premera’s Value-Based Network on February 1

(Mountlake Terrace, WA)–Premera Blue Cross announced today that Providence Health and Services facilities and healthcare practitioners in Spokane will be part of the network that serves Premera’s individual and small group customers in 2014, effective February 1. Providence facilities and health care practitioners that will now be part of Premera’s value-based network in Spokane include Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, and Providence Medical Group.

“This is an important agreement that expands access for our members to high quality care,” said Rich Maturi, Premera’s Senior Vice President for Health Care Delivery Systems. “Providence is a high quality provider with tremendous value in Spokane. We’ve worked together on a number of collaborations and are pleased to add them to the value-based network for our individual and small group customers in 2014.”

The addition of Providence Health and Services to Premera’s value-based network takes effect February 1. Premera’s members in the individual and small group markets, including those purchasing plans through the Washington Healthplanfinder, will be able to seek medical care at Providence facilities and with Providence healthcare practitioners at an in-network benefit level starting on that day.

“Affordability for health plans has been one of the biggest concerns we’ve heard from our customers,” continued Maturi. “We’re happy to add Providence to our value-based network while holding our highly competitive rates steady for our members on individual and small group plans.”

“We are excited that Premera members enrolled in these new plans will have access to Providence physicians and hospitals in Spokane,” says Scott O’Brien, chief strategy officer for Spokane’s Providence Health Care.  “During this time of dramatic change in healthcare, we know that Providence and Premera will need to forge new ways to work together to provide patients access to high quality care at a more competitive cost, and Providence welcomes this opportunity,” continued O’Brien.

Members with questions about how this change impacts them should call the customer service number on the back of their Premera ID card. Consumers looking for information about providers in the WA Healthplanfinder should know it may take several weeks for that provider finder tool to be updated based on this announcement. Consumers with questions about Premera’s network are encouraged to call 1-800-722-1471.
