Heart Beat began in 1960 as a monthly newspaper for Sacred Heart Hospital staff, volunteers and Sacred Heart School of Nursing personnel. Within just four years, it went to a one-color magazine format and by the early 1970s, its focus shifted from employee news to information for physicians, financial supporters and other friends of the hospital.
Over the decades, Heart Beat has continued to evolved, to match today’s standard for magazines, as well as to reach the general public with news about Providence services and spotlights on the “people who make the Heart beat.” Today, it reaches 100,000 homes and businesses Spokane and Stevens counties, as well as legislative leaders in Olympia and former patients located throughout the country.
