CPAP Machine

Also known as: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

Providence offers nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) as a treatment for sleep apnea.

This extremely successful method consists of a small nasal mask/compressor unit, worn while you sleep, that delivers a continuous flow of air to keep the breathing passage open.

When an individual suffers from obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles of the upper airway relax, narrowing or blocking the airway. The CPAP machine works to alleviate the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea by delivering steady pressure to keep the airway open, ultimately allowing for more productive sleep and breathing.

It is important to note that the success of the CPAP machine comes from the airway pressure and not just the flow of the air. For this reason only a sleep physician can prescribe the appropriate amount of pressure.
