Speech language pathologists evaluate, diagnose and treat people with oral communication disorders. Speech therapists are instrumental in preventing problems related to speech, language, cognitive communication, voice and fluency. This includes both receptive (understanding speech) and expressive (speaking) communication problems.

Speech therapists are part of the rehabilitation team and offer the following types of care:

  • Augmentative communication devices
  • Cognitive disorders, including thinking, memory and learning
  • Speech fluency and stuttering disorders
  • Written language disorders

Speech therapists provide support for the following types of conditions: 

  • Cancer
  • Hearing Loss
  • Laryngectomy
  • Nervous system impairments and diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s, ALS, MS)
  • Stroke
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Voice problems
